SYNOPSIS

The story is about Rudolf Rassendyll, a young English gentleman. He goes to Ruritania for a holiday but ends up having a wild and exciting adventure. Duke Michael, the younger brother of the King, is plotting to overthrow the King and take over. Since Rassendyll bears a strong resemblance to the king, he is asked to impersonate the King. In order to save him, Rudolf has to fight the six “famous bodyguards” of the Duke. At the same time, he falls in love with Princess Flavia, the King’s fiancee and she with him. However, they decide that loyalty to the King and the country is far more noble than fulfilling their desire to be with one another. Rassendyll and Flavia sacrifice their love for one another for the sake of King Rudolf and Ruritania. Rassendyll saves the King, then leaves the country. Flavia stays behind and marries the King. In remembrance of their love to each other, every year, they send each other a single stalk rose.
